POSITION: Deputy Director

Full Time: 37.5 hours weekly

SALARY: TBD

SUPERVISOR: Executive Director

Location: Berkeley

Summary: The Center for Independent Living (CIL) is a National leader in helping people with disabilities live independently and become fully participating members of society.

CIL holds itself to the highest standard of consumer service and expects its employees to strive for excellence. An executive level position, the Deputy Director plays a critical role in furthering this goal and is the acting Executive Director in their absence. 

This position is a member of the CIL Management Team and represents the organization to the general public, partner organizations, government officials and funders.

The Deputy Director has the primary responsibility for the delivery of programmatic services provided by CIL. The ideal candidate must: organize, encourage, support and direct program staff. 

Key areas of responsibility include a) direct supervision of CIL Program Managers; b) writes and submits critical government grants and reports in a timely manner. It may require direct independent living services to consumers as needed.  

Responsibilities: 

Executive

 

  1. Function as acting Executive Director in the absence of Executive Director.

 

  1. Assist the Executive Director in carrying out specific projects with CIL departments and staff.

 

  1. Assist with evaluating overall service performance of CIL on an annual basis.

 

  1. Assist the Executive Director and the Human Resources Manager in personnel policy issues and resolving personnel problems.

 

  1. Assist Finance Director with setting annual budget and monitoring ongoing expenditures by staff.

 

  1. Participate on the Management Team and maintain regular and effective communication between Berkeley and Oakland Program Managers and Program staff. Encourage and assist in the back and forth flow of information from consumer to upper management and the board of directors.

 

  1. Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director 

Programmatic

 

  1. Be a positive role model to staff by being inclusive, modeling effective conflict resolution skills, and demonstrating ethical and professional demeanor.

 

  1. Performs direct supervision of Program Managers to ensure effective service delivery to consumers.

 

  1. Supervise assigned program staff, including: administer weekly team meetings, direct staff in team implementation, conduct regular staff performance evaluations.

 

  1. Monitor compliance of grants and contracts to ensure that reports are submitted at required intervals and are accurately prepared. Monitor consumer files of all supervised staff for quality and completeness.

 

  1. Assist in coordinating in-service training to staff on CIL policies, services, and reporting procedures in conjunction with Program Managers and Human Resource Manager.

 

6.     Organize and support staff to facilitate the needs of consumers. Track performance of staff in meeting the needs of CIL services or referrals.

 

  1. Update standard operating procedures as needed and orient all new Program Managers and program staff.

 

  1. Attend monthly Program Committee of the Board of Directors.

 

  1. Assist with activities as assigned by Program Committee.

 

  1. Other similar duties assigned by the Executive Director. 

Public Relations

 

1.     Perform public speaking on behalf of the agency regarding community advocacy and community relations.

 

2.     Attend relevant community meetings and collaborate with other agencies on programs and special projects.

 

3.     Represent the agency and appoint staff where appropriate to serve on community committees, councils, commissions, etc., as needed to carry out CIL’s mission.

 

4.     Work as a General Advocate in proving community advocacy for systems change.

 

5.     Conduct disability awareness and sensitivity training to community. Set fees where necessary.

 

Fundraising:

 

  1. Assist Executive Director in networking with foundations, corporations and individual donors.
  2. Assist Development staff with special fundraising events.
  3. Assist with development staff to collect programmatic information for grant proposals and reports.
  4. Attend development and/or funder meetings as needed.
