Job Description

 ABOUT THE PROGRAM:

YO! is CFILC’s statewide youth with disabilities action network, focused on connecting, educating and organizing youth with disabilities aged 16-29 throughout California. We achieve this through the development of statewide and regional Youth Advocacy Summits, and an ongoing statewide communication network that includes a YO! Information and Referral line, an interactive website, a listserv and social networking opportunities for youth with disabilities. YO! is focused on developing leadership, identifying issues, organizing to take collective action, mentorship and volunteering in our communities to create social change.   

OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION:

Under the direction of the Deputy Director, the Youth Advocate is responsible for answering the YO! Information and Referral Line as well as developing materials and resources for YO! Line callers. This position is responsible for data input and collection for the YO! Line database. The YO! Advocate develops materials for the online YO! 411 and Internet Safety sections of the YO! website. This position is responsible for scheduling YO! webinars and teleconference meetings and providing logistical support to the Youth Advisory Council, Youth Leadership Forum, Disability Mentoring Day activities and other YO! program activities. This is a part-time position working approximately 20 hours per week.  

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist in organizing of activities related to CFILC’s Youth Organizing! Disabled & Proud program.
  • Assist in the organizing of events that are youth led and youth driven, such as summits, community forums, trainings and leadership events.
  • Answer the YO! Information and Referral Line.
  • Responsible for data collection and input of YO! Line data for reporting, and YO! database resource development.
  • Develop online content for YO! website.
  • Educate and support YO! part-time Youth Organizing volunteers.
  • Other duties as assigned.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A minimum of a High School Diploma or General Educational Equivalent and at least one year experience in the disability community OR at least three years experience in disability and youth organizing.
  • Computer experience including familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel required.
  • Ability to communicate with youth and adults.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality. 
  • Ability to initiate projects and work with supervision. 
  • Ability to operate in a computer-based office environment. 
  • Computer experience including familiarity with Microsoft Word, Facebook, MySpace, Twitter.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bilingual English/Spanish
  • Personal experience with a disability
  • Experience working with youth with disabilities
  • Familiarity with disability issues that impact youth
