Support the CLASS Program

One of the most important components of the Federal health care reform’s Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) was the creation of the Community Living Assistance Services and Supports (CLASS) Program; a voluntary, Federally-administered and consumer financed long-term care insurance program.

The disability community is at risk of losing an important long-term care insurance program. It’s not too late to urge the President and Congress to consider ways in which the CLASS Program can be successfully implemented to serve disabled Americans while also sustaining fiscal viability.

I am writing to respectfully urge you to work with Congress to protect the implementation of the Community Living Assistive Services and Supports (CLASS) Program.  As you are aware, the American public currently lacks sufficient access to long-term care insurance, and CLASS is the solution that is an essential part of meaningful health care reform.

CLASS was included in the Affordable Care Act because every American family is painfully aware that an accident or illness could require long-term care that would financially devastate their households.  The creation of CLASS as a voluntary, Federally-administered and consumer financed voluntary long-term care insurance program will protect families if an income-earner becomes functionally limited or permanently disabled.

Today, the continuation of CLASS is at risk of becoming as a casualty in the Federal deficit reduction battle.  I agree that deficit reduction is important, but eliminating CLASS would do nothing to reduce the deficit and it would actually add to the deficit.  Congress’ own non-partisan fiscal analysts have concluded that CLASS will reduce the Federal deficit by $83 billion over ten years.

There is overwhelming public support for CLASS.  A recent poll found that 76 percent of all Americans support CLASS, including 69 percent of Republican voters, 71 percent of Independent voters, and 87 percent of Democratic voters.  Eliminating CLASS would be a “lose-lose” proposition for American families.

I urge you to insist that Congress support the implementation of the CLASS program.  We deserve the opportunity to plan responsibly for our long-term care services and support before it is too late.
